SERVICE & COMMUNITY SUPPORT
It is my fervent belief that the performing arts exist to serve the communities that foster our work. The actors in all of my productions travel to public schools and perform for literature and humanities classes, explaining the language used in Shakespeare or the context of a play like August Wilson’s Fences. When these young audiences see the performances for the first time, they are able to follow the story and identify different characters, armed with some knowledge of the plot, but more importantly with the assurance that THEY ARE WELCOME HERE. This is not art for and by “elites,” these are the universal stories that unite us.
What audiences see on the stage is a tiny fraction of the impact that theatre has on a community. In every production there are elements of carpentry, sound design, lighting, and costume design. There are parents, grandparents, siblings, and friends who have helped the actors learn their lines or patiently waited in parking lots to give their kids a ride home. My mission is to create audiences by first creating communities.
